Kyrie Andrew Irving was born on March 23, 1992 in Melbourne, Australia. His father, Drederick, was a professional basketball player for the Bulleen Boomers of the South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL). In 1994, at the age of two, Irving and his family relocated to the United States, settling in West Orange, New Jersey. Irving currently holds dual citizenship in both the United States and Australia.
When Irving was four years old, his mother, Elizabeth, died unexpectedly from Sepsis Syndrome, a complex inflammatory condition. Irving’s father, Dred, raised both Kyrie and his older sister, Asia. He later remarried to Shetellia, with whom he had a third child, daughter London Irving. London is Kyrie’s step-sister and is 16 years younger than the Cavaliers’ star floor general. Irving spent the first two years of his high school career at Montclair Kimberley Academy before transferring to St. Patrick High School where he emerged as one of the most highly touted basketball prospects in the country. As a collegiate athlete, Irving spent one season at Duke University before entering the 2011 NBA Draft. |
